TL;DR: Water is a chemical. Rose extract is a chemical. Everything is a chemical. "Chemical-free" is not a scientific claim, it's a marketing phrase that exploits chemophobia. Ask instead: which specific ingredients, at what concentrations, and what is the evidence for their safety and efficacy?
I am going to say something that brands in the "natural skincare" space are rarely willing to say: "chemical-free" is not a thing that exists.
Not in skincare. Not in food. Not anywhere. Chemistry is the science of matter — and everything is matter. Water (H₂O) is a chemical. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a chemical. Cold-pressed rose extract contains over 300 identified chemical compounds. The air you are breathing right now is a mixture of chemicals.
When a skincare brand claims to be "chemical-free," one of two things is true: either they do not understand what the word "chemical" means, or they are using your discomfort with the word to sell you something.
Neither is acceptable.
Why "Chemical-Free" Became a Marketing Category
The rise of "chemical-free" skincare is a product of what scientists call chemophobia — a generalised, culturally reinforced fear of synthetic compounds, particularly in products applied to the body. It is partly legitimate: there are synthetic compounds used in skincare that have genuine safety concerns, including some parabens (specifically butylparaben and propylparaben, which have endocrine-disruption concerns in high concentrations), certain UV filters, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Those are valid concerns, and they are worth naming specifically.
But chemophobia, when marketed, becomes a blunt instrument. "Chemical-free" suggests that all synthetic compounds are harmful and all natural ones are safe. This is demonstrably false:

Poison ivy is entirely natural and will give you a severe contact dermatitis.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is the most acutely toxic substance known to science — and is entirely natural (produced by a bacterium).

Synthetic hyaluronic acid, produced in a lab, is chemically identical to the hyaluronic acid your skin produces natively.

Many plant-derived essential oils are more common causes of contact allergies than the synthetic preservatives being avoided in their name.
What Indian Consumer Protection Law Says
Under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, cosmetic claims must be substantiated. The CCPA (Central Consumer Protection Authority) guidelines on advertising (2022, updated 2024) prohibit misleading claims that cannot be proven. A claim of "chemical-free" would be considered misleading under these guidelines because it is scientifically incoherent — no product can be chemical-free.

We use precise language: preservative-free (meaning no added synthetic preservatives), cold-pressed (meaning not heat-processed), and botanical (meaning plant-derived actives as primary ingredients). Each of these claims is verifiable and specific.
The Questions You Should Be Asking Instead
Rather than asking "is this chemical-free?" — which has no meaningful answer — ask:

Which preservatives are used, and at what concentrations? Phenoxyethanol is safe at below 1%. Parabens have a more complex safety profile depending on the type and concentration.

How has the product been processed? Cold-pressed is meaningfully different from solvent-extracted or heat-processed in terms of bio-active retention.

What is the shelf life and how is it achieved? A 24-month shelf life in a preservative-free product is either a false claim or uses antimicrobial botanicals at concentrations that function as preservatives.

Has the formulation been tested for irritation and sensitisation? Not just individual ingredients, the complete formulation.

Are the "natural" ingredients certified and sourced verifiably? "Rose extract" can mean many things, from genuine cold-pressed Rosa damascena to a synthetic rose fragrance compound.
What "Preservative-Free" Actually Means at NB
We are preservative-free in the specific sense: we do not add synthetic preservatives to our formulations. We achieve stability through three mechanisms: cold-pressing (which avoids introducing water that accelerates microbial growth in botanical materials), micro-batch production (small volumes are consumed before microbial counts become significant), and cold-chain distribution (refrigeration throughout, from production to your home).
This is why our products have a 3–4 week shelf life after opening, must be stored in the refrigerator, and are shipped with cold-chain packaging from New Delhi. It is also why we are genuinely preservative-free — not because we use antimicrobial rosemary extract or neem oil at a high enough concentration to suppress microbial growth (which would be functionally equivalent to using a synthetic preservative).
The distinction matters if you care about what you're actually putting on your skin.
